New Geo-Tracking Buoys Make a Splash

Morcom has been testing a drifting buoy developed for the U.S. Coast Guard. The MTU-1175 is a device designed with unique configurability and robustness characteristics that can be employed for tracking objects at sea (or other bodies of water) with unprecedented configurability and robustness to be suitable for different scenarios. The device is capable of withstanding being air-dropped into sea water from aircraft and to autonomously transmit its position at configured intervals while floating. The MTU-1175 uses cutting edge Automatic Identification System (AIS) technology and GPS to transmit its accurate location to AIS receivers in overt or covert mode. It also supports legacy RF beacon technology (VHF RF) and fallback (light emission) for visual location at daytime or nighttime.
